The Esala Perahera (the Festival of the Tooth) is the grand Buddhist festival of Esala held in Sri Lanka. Originally organized to invite the rains, watch in awe as this ancient traditional procession is carried out. The sound of whip-crackers (symbolizing Thunder) start the procession, followed by torch-bearers (signifying Lightning) and many traditional dancers (symbolizing Rain Drops). Adding to the grandeur are the many proud elephants (symbols of large Rain Clouds) elegantly costumed, that walk by seeming to understand their importance to this unforgettable event .The Perahera Season happens during the months of July or August in the hill city of Kandy, it has become a unique symbol of Sri Lanka.
