| Whale & Dolphin Watching in Sri Lanka |
| Sri Lanka has become a popular destination for whale watching enthusiasts. Sri Lankan waters are very rich in cetaceans with twenty seven species being recorded to date. One hundred and three river systems contribute a steady nutrient flow to the ocean. This, combined with upwelling at the edge of the continental shelf create ideal conditions to support a healthy year-round food chain in the warm tropical waters around the island. Many Blue Whale and Sperm Whale sightings have been noted here along with pods of Spinner and Bottle Nose dolphins as well as Common, Striped and Risso’s dolphin varieties. Dondra Point, Mirissa is Sri Lanka's southern most point and the best place for such sightings. |
